Five Important Reasons for Studying the Bible - Page 2

3. The Authority of the Bible - On the question of Bible authority  Martyn Lloyd Jones says these words (from the Authority of Scripture)

We all therefore have to face this ultimate and final question: Do we accept the Bible as the Word of God, as the sole authority in all matters of faith and practice, or do we not? Is the whole of my thinking governed by Scripture, or do I come with my reason and pick and choose out of Scripture and sit in judgment on it, putting myself and modern knowledge forward as the ultimate standard and authority? The issue is crystal clear.

Do I accept Scripture as a revelation from God, or do I trust to speculation, human knowledge, human learning, human understanding and human reasons Or, putting it still more simply, Do I pin my faith to, and subject all my thinking to, what I read in the Bible? Or do I defer to modern knowledge, to modern learning, to what people think today, to what we know at this present time which was not known in the past? It is inevitable that we occupy one or the other of those two positions.

Fourthly, the Word of God is complete. - All though many books are written about the Bible and its contents, nonetheless they are not the authoritive words of God. The Bible does not need any new chapters or verses. It is all given to us already. We may consult commentaries that give insights to content, nether the less they are still man’s words to the Bible.

The Bible is God's Word because it is the holy Word of God. It is complete. In, God gives us a warning,

“If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Rev. 22:18-19)

The Gospel of John reminds in the first Chapter. -  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. (John 1:1-5)

Fifthly Scripture reminds us that it is Spiritual food –  It is the “Word” which nourishes the body and helps us to grow and mature in the Christian faith. The Lord Jesus in Johns Gospel, “I am the Bread of Life” Bread is a life sustaining commodity which nourishes the physical body, likewise Jesus is that life sustaining food.

“Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whosoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35)

The Scriptures also reminds to - “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. (2 Tim. 2:15)

Most important of all, the Bible is the Word of God. It contains the mind of God and His will for each one of our lives. Can we avoid such a statement It is not enough to know our Bible, it also must be a part of our spiritual soul, living and pulse-sating and energising us day by Day
